Research

With the support of various funders, the ELC carries out research in selected areas of environmental and natural resources law and policy. The research is undertaken in support of either or both of the ELC’s ends:

  • enactment and effective enforcement of sound environmental laws and policies; and
  • effective and informed public participation in environmental regulatory, law-making and decision-making processes.

Wherever possible, the ELC’s research products include recommendations for environmental law and policy reform.

Recent research topics include:

  • application of the public interest in regulatory decision-making;
  • public access to and involvement in environmental regulatory and appeal processes;
  • security deposits for oil sands reclamation; and
  • conservation easements.
The ELC is also able to provide environmental and natural resources law research services on a fee for service basis. Any fee for service work must further the mission of the ELC by contributing to the development of laws, policies and legal processes that protect the environment. For more information regarding customized research services, contact the Executive Director by telephone at (780) 424-5099, toll-free at 1-800-661-4238 or by email.
