ELC lawyers play a pivotal role in environmental law and policy reform in Alberta, often at the invitation of governments that value their knowledge of the issues and public opinion and the ELC’s objective approach. Where possible, the ELC works with other organizations and interests on law and policy reform, in pursuit of its mission of ensuring that laws, policies and legal processes protect the environment.
Activities in this program area include serving on law reform or monitoring committees, participating in law and policy reform processes, and preparing reform briefs and commentaries that are made publicly available through the ELC’s website. Areas of strategic focus for ELC lawyers in relation to law reform are:
- land use;
- water;
- cumulative environmental impacts;
- public participation, and
- climate change.
