* Sir John Mactaggart (1867-1956) obtained his first capital by walking to work to save the bus fare. By the end of his life he was the largest and most successful builder and developer in Scotland. He was created a baronet in 1938 for his many benefactions, including the donation of King's Park to the City of Glasgow. He was the first Scottish builder to design and build apartments with gardens, because he believed that all homes, whether for rich or poor, should have an individual green space. He was the original treasurer of the Scottish Socialist Party and of the English Speaking Union.

The present Sir John Mactaggart (b. 1951) is the fourth generation of builders and developers to support the family interest in the protection of the environment. He created the Mactaggart Third Fund, a charitable organization which makes donations all over the world, and which provided the capital for this prize.
